INTERNATIONAL, (LIBERDADETL.com) — A high school student named Nopison Tebai (21) reportedly died after being shot by members of the Dogiyai Police Resort in Dogimani Village, Dogiyai District, Dogiyai Regency, on Sunday (May 10, 2026) at around 9:00 a.m. WIT.
The shooting occurred near the soccer field next to the Dogiyai District Office, where a youth sports tournament was being held with the community as part of a village fundraising activity.
The victim was identified as an 11th-grade social studies student at SMAN 2 Dogiyai and was born in 2005.
“Nopison Tebai was 21 years old. He was a student at SMAN 2 Dogiyai. He was my student, 11th-grade social studies, so I know this based on school records,” Benny Goo told Nadi Papua via WhatsApp.
Based on initial investigative reports gathered from local residents, several youths were known to have built huts around the playing field, and some of them often spent the night there to guard tournament equipment and prepare for the match.
Residents reported that the day before the incident, Saturday (May 9), members of the Dogiyai Police Department had visited the tournament area to monitor the activity.
On Sunday morning, while most residents were attending church services, several young men were still around the huts and the playing field. The victim, Nopison Tebai, was reportedly with his friends in a hut near the field, while several other young men were in the field area.
“At that time, many people were going to worship. Some young people were still staying in huts near the field,” said a resident who requested anonymity.
According to witnesses, the situation escalated when police officers arrived and pointed their guns at the young men around the field. Several youths then attempted to flee in fear.
“The children ran for their lives because the officers arrived with guns,” said a witness.
During the incident, Nopison Tebai was reportedly shot in the chest under his left arm, which penetrated through to the right side of his body. The victim reportedly fell in the bushes not far from the hut.
Residents reported that the victim did not receive medical attention and was found deceased near the scene.
As of the time of this report’s writing, there has been no official statement from the Indonesian National Police or the Dogiyai Police regarding the incident.
Around 11:30 a.m. WIT, the situation in Idadagi Village escalated after two police vehicles reportedly arrived at the scene. The presence of the officers sparked renewed tensions with a number of local youths.
A few minutes later, three additional police vehicles reportedly arrived in the area. Residents reported clashes between security forces and youth groups in several areas of the village.
The tension then spread to the Epegeuwodimi area, Kali Kasuari, and the entrance to Dogimani. Residents stated that the security situation remains tense and urged the public to remain vigilant.
